Wow. You are really in a great financial place at 40 despite layoffs. Impressive. I'm 50 and dream of owning a home. Also it always shocks me that even a startup gave 2 months severance and the billion dollar agency I worked for gave us 2 weeks. And last startup that laid me off gave nothing.

.. hope this comment is not too personal, but it seems your budget is not well aligned. Without kids you should be in better shape. Probably getting out of the mortgage would help a lot (why not rent?) and lowering expectations (directors are not just hired, usually you advance from within, so my own experience) could get you back on board somewhere

Be wary of the customer service with those banks. Sometimes a lower yield is worth the peace of mind.
